About these preconception supplements
What's the difference between folate and folic acid?
Folate is a naturally occurring form of vitamin B9, while folic acid is a synthetic form commonly found in supplements and fortified foods. Some people choose supplements containing active forms of folate, particularly if they have difficulty converting folic acid efficiently. If you're unsure which option is right for you, speak with your healthcare professional.
When should I start taking prenatal supplements?
Our GP recommended we started taking prenatal supplements before conception, ideally at least one month prior to trying to conceive and I think that assisted our own journey since we were diagnosed with low fertility. Starting early helps ensure important nutrients are available during the earliest stages of pregnancy.
Why is folate important before pregnancy?
Folate is important before pregnancy because it prevents major birth defects of the baby’s brain and spine that form in the very first weeks of pregnancy, often before you even know you are pregnant.
Do I need prenatal supplements if I eat a healthy diet?
A balanced diet is important, but some nutrients may still be difficult to obtain consistently through food alone. Prenatal supplements are designed to help support nutritional intake during preconception and pregnancy.
What is active folate?
Active folate refers to forms of folate that are already in a usable form for the body.
